What is this Test?
A Treadmill Test (TMT), also called an Exercise Stress Test, evaluates how the heart responds to increased physical demand. It helps uncover problems that may not appear at rest.
Purpose
Diagnoses coronary artery disease, evaluates exercise-induced arrhythmias, assesses fitness for surgery or rehabilitation programmes, and determines safe exercise levels for patients with known heart disease.
How It Works
The patient walks on a treadmill at increasing speeds and inclines while an ECG, heart rate, and blood pressure are continuously monitored. The test is stopped if target heart rate is reached or symptoms develop. The ECG changes during exercise reveal blood flow problems to the heart.
How to Prepare
Avoid eating or drinking (except water) for 3 hours before. Wear comfortable shoes and loose clothing. Continue medications unless instructed otherwise by your doctor.
