What is this Test?
An echocardiogram is an ultrasound scan of the heart. It provides detailed images of the heart's chambers, valves, walls, and the major blood vessels attached to the heart.
Purpose
Assesses pumping function (ejection fraction), diagnoses valve disease, detects cardiomyopathy, evaluates heart failure, identifies congenital defects, and checks for pericardial effusion (fluid around the heart).
How It Works
A transducer emits high-frequency sound waves that bounce off the heart structures and return as echoes. A computer converts these echoes into moving images displayed on a monitor, allowing real-time visualisation of heart function.
How to Prepare
No special preparation required. Wear loose, comfortable clothing for easy access to the chest area.
