What is this Test?
An ECG records the electrical activity of the heart. It is one of the most common and quick cardiac investigations used worldwide to detect a wide range of heart conditions.
Purpose
Detects arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats), heart attacks (current or past), conduction abnormalities, electrolyte imbalances, and heart enlargement. Often the first test ordered when a cardiac problem is suspected.
How It Works
Electrodes (sticky patches) are placed on the chest, arms, and legs. These measure the electrical impulses produced with each heartbeat and display them as waves on a graph. The pattern of these waves reveals information about heart rate, rhythm, and structure.
How to Prepare
No special preparation needed. Remove metal jewellery and avoid applying lotions to the chest on the day of the test.
